Scholarship 2016-2017
Kara Crowley’s grant supports a 2019 summer residency at Xavier University of New Orleans to develop a new body of work to draw awareness to the importance of Black women’s health and their evolution as idols of our current time. Crowley will research the struggles of Black women relating to mental, physical, and emotional health during her residency through painting and mixed media. Professor Ron Bechet and Dr. Sarah Clunis will mentor Crowly in the studio and fellow artist Jourdan Barnes will mentor Crowley in photo and video documentation.
Crowly earned a BA from Xavier University in 2017 and is now the visual arts teacher at St. Katharine Drexel Preparatory High School. She has exhibited at White Linen Night, Xavier University, Joan Mitchell Center, AXIOM Gallery, Frenchy's Gallery, Ochsner Hospital and YAYA Inc. Crowley has worked at M Francis Gallery, Mix It Up Studio and the New Orleans Museum of Art. She has interned at Ashe Cultural Arts Center, Studio BE, and YAYA Inc (2010-2012).
Kara Crowley was active the YAYA guild 2008-2019.
